In a world where challenges often define our paths, Nam Nguyen’s story shines with determination, resilience and a genuine desire to help create a more inclusive and equitable world.

From his humble beginnings as an international student at John Paul International College with High School Preparation Course, then the main College, Nam’s path was marked by challenges, personal growth and moments of triumph. Nam’s recollection of his time at JPC is adorned with treasured memories, but a time during a Specialist Mathematics class is the most memorable. Struggling with a complex differential equation, Nam sought help and was amazed by his entire class rallying around him and collaborating to find the answer. The sense of accomplishment was truly unforgettable. Grateful for the guidance of his teacher Leanne Blood, that day in her class is a moment that will always hold a special place in his heart.

Academically, Nam’s achievements speak volumes about his commitment to excellence. He stands as a recipient of esteemed awards, including the Munns Prize (Dux of the College), Summa Cum Laude, Pro Diligentia and Academic Honours and prizes in subjects including Chemistry, English as an Additional Language, Mathematical Methods, Physics and Specialist Mathematics. This demonstrates Nam’s thirst for knowledge and his exceptional aptitude in academic disciplines. As an international student from Vietnam, Nam faced both challenges and opportunities for personal growth. Living with an Australian homestay family became an enriching experience as they swiftly became his second family, supporting him through his struggles and celebrating his achievements. Navigating life in a foreign country also instilled in Nam invaluable lessons about responsibility and independence. Remarkably, at the age of 16, Nam became fully financially independent by running a successful jewellery business, teaching him the importance of budgeting, saving and taking care of himself.

Nam found an invaluable resource in the JPC Careers Department, where Kristy Baldwin became his guiding light as she extended extraordinary support when Nam was grappling with the overwhelming task of choosing a career path. With her guidance, Nam gained confidence in making his decision, opening doors to a future filled with limitless possibilities.

Beyond academics, Nam demonstrated a keen sense of responsibility and entrepreneurship by establishing a successful jewellery business at just 16, making him financially independent. More than a business, his venture became a conduit for positive change, aiding disabled children in Vietnam.

Nam later opted to study economics and sociology at university, keeping his vision of aiding children with disabilities in developing nations alive. He has already made strides in this direction by setting up a charity fund in Vietnam, working for Lifeline in Australia, and embarking on establishing a national crisis helpline in Vietnam. His long-term ambition is to be an education economist, focusing on enhancing accessibility and opportunity for disabled students in developing countries.

As Nam continues his journey, his vision and perseverance promise to reshape education for countless disabled children, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future.
