The Science Behind the Top Schools List

Creating the definitive ranking of the Top 100 Private Schools in Australia was a rigorous, data-driven process developed by News Corp’s education and data journalism team, published in The Australian in July 2025.

A comprehensive weighted ranking formula was used to evaluate schools based on the following criteria:

  • NAPLAN and ATAR results – measuring academic success across multiple year levels;
  • Student–teacher ratios – reflecting personalised attention and classroom support;
  • School fees, funding levels and socio-economic advantage ratings – recognising financial accessibility and equity;
  • Campus facilities – with bonus points for pools, theatres, and specialist centres;
  • Subject breadth – rewarding schools that offer niche and specialty curriculum choices;
  • Co-curricular opportunities – including leadership, entrepreneurship, and cultural programs;
  • Sporting programs – with added value for high-performance and specialist sports offerings.

This multi-dimensional methodology ensures the rankings reflect not just academic outcomes, but a holistic view of educational excellence.
