High School Preparation Online English Level 3
|
Students in the Level Three online class did something they had never experienced before. They joined a virtual JPIC class from the comfort of their homes in China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. After the initial discomfort, they all very quickly adapted to their new environment and became active learners. Each one of them set their goals, and for the past six weeks they have all been working tirelessly towards achieving success. |
During the first two weeks we discussed daily routines, hobbies and interests, and compared our country, culture and lifestyle with the Australian way of life. We also described the appearance and personality of people. The next project involved exploring travel destinations and tourism in Australia and around the world. We created a PowerPoint about a dream holiday and presented it in class. At the moment, we are exploring the theme ‘Events, stories and the news’. We are studying biographies of famous people and reading headlines and news stories. We also presented a personal recount and wrote about our own experiences. We are currently preparing to present a PowerPoint biography of a famous person. The weekly oral presentations and the one-minute speech every day have helped us become more fluent and build confidence. One of our goals is to improve our writing skills so we practise writing every day.
The next few weeks are going to be more challenging. All students will have to continue to work hard and complete all assignments and assessments to the best of their ability. Our next themes are ‘The future and technology’ and ‘At the shops’. Some of the tasks include making predictions for the future, studying advertisements, and giving opinions using persuasive techniques.
Maths
Our online class have hit the ground running this term and embraced the opportunity to study Mathematics at JPIC. They have been developing their mathematical vocabulary and practising solving worded problems from topics such as fractions/decimals/percentages, financial maths and algebra. All students are striving towards completing their final online assessments in Week Eight.
Science
The students have been busy working in a virtual laboratory. They have observed scientists doing experiments. The students are using their scientific language and knowledge to understand the scientific method, and how to use this knowledge to problem-solve in the real world.
