JPC Secondary School Years 7 - 12

Secondary School Pathway

John Paul College Secondary School students' key to success.

  • Teachers guide students to choose subjects that align with their career aspirations and university pathways
  • Students have a wide range of subjects to choose from that reflect their interests and abilities
  • Through selected subjects, JPC academic staff help students develop critical skills, knowledge and attitudes that will be useful throughout their lives.

Our comprehensive range of subjects provide all students with opportunities to find their passion and ignite success. In JPC Primary School, students choose a language to study. In JPC Secondary School, students begin choosing subjects from a wider range of disciplines and start exploring their pathway.

Years 7 & 8

Students are introduced to discipline-based learning and begin to elect subjects. Year 7 is the year that students start to explore their Secondary School pathway and subjects. This enables students to start 'tasting' subjects before later crucial Secondary years. These foundational Secondary years are where students will learn to work like a scientist, work like a mathematician, or like a historian.

Year 9

Year 9 is the springboard into Senior Years 10, 11 and 12. Whilst students continue to develop their knowledge and skills in line with the Australian Curriculum, Year 9 is an important year when students start looking towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) studies (High School certificate). Studies for the Queensland Certificate of Education begin in the middle of Year 10, so Year 9 is a crucial year for students to transition from exploring their pathway to consolidating and deciding their pathway. As in Years 7 and 8, students have compulsory and elective subjects.

Years 10 - 12 (Senior years)

Both are used for entry into universities around Australia and the world.

Year 10 is the entry point to the Senior phase of learning. It is the final phase of the learning curriculum and ensures students are ready and prepared for their Senior studies. It is when students reflect on their learning and make important decisions towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.

At the start of Year 10, students go through a rigorous Senior Education and Training Planning (SET Planning) process. This includes specialist subject selection sessions and interviews to ensure students make informed subject choices that align with their university and career aspirations.

Students choose electives from a wide range of Queensland Curriculum subjects. From the middle of Year 10, students can choose Vocational Education and Training qualifications as electives.

JPC currently offers a wide range of QCAA general subjects to our Senior students. They commence these in the second semester of Year 10 or 10.5. Three of these subjects have extension courses available for students who want to focus on depth studies in their areas of expertise. Our programs also offer opportunities for students to select from three applied subjects in addition to that qualification in four different industry areas. The suite of subjects we have available for students in Year 10 and 10.5 provide them with relevant choices to ensure that their interests and ability are reflected.
