Before You Start

How the Pathway Estimator Works

We combine your child’s age, proposed start date and current English level against JPC’s published Preparation Pathways and Entry Requirements to sketch out an estimated, term-by-term journey — the same journey shown on our homepage, personalised to your child.

1. Tell Us About Your Child

Name, date of birth, nationality, current year level and when their school year finishes — since academic calendars vary by country, this determines the Australian year level your child would join.

2. Estimate English Level

Have an official test score (AEAS, IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge)? Great — use it. No test yet? A quick self-assessment works too.

3. See the Pathway

We draw the exact term-by-term route — Preparation Course, Main Stream year levels, and on to university — just like the journey above.

Tell Us About the Student

We’ve narrowed this to the range typical for their age — just pick whichever matches their current school.

Academic calendars vary by country — this lines their current year level up with Australia’s January–November school year.

When Would You Like to Start?

Please allow at least 2 months before the term begins — your family needs that time to receive an offer, accept a place and apply for a student visa. Terms starting sooner are shown but cannot be selected.

Students may join JPC at the start of any term — except Year 11, which must begin in Term 1. We’ll adjust the start date automatically if that applies to your child.

Common Questions

Pathway Calculator FAQs

Is this pathway guaranteed once I calculate it?

No. This tool gives a general estimate only and is not legally binding or a guarantee of enrolment. Every application is individually reviewed by the relevant Head of School, including an interview and a review of academic reports, before a place is offered.

How is the target year level worked out?

We use your child’s date of birth and Queensland’s standard age-based year-level guide (age as at 30 June in the intake year) — the same approach Queensland schools use, since a “Year 8” overseas doesn’t always line up with a Queensland Year 8.

What if my child doesn’t have an official English test?

That’s completely fine — use the self-assessment option. It uses the same Starter–Upper-Intermediate scale as our Preparation Pathways. We recommend booking an official test or an on-arrival placement check closer to your intake date to confirm the estimate.

Why must Year 11 start in Term 1?

Year 11 and 12 form a two-year senior secondary program (the Queensland Certificate of Education). Because subjects build across the full two years, students can only commence this phase at the start of Term 1.

Can my child skip the Preparation Course?

Yes — if your child’s assessed English level and academic record already meet our Direct Entry requirements for their target year level, no Preparation Course is needed. The calculator will show “Direct Entry” in that case.

My results mention Year 12 was “redirected” — why?

There is no Preparation Course bridge directly into Year 12 — entry that late requires either Direct Entry English standards or a Recognition of Prior Learning assessment. Where this applies, we map the pathway through Year 11 first, which leads naturally into Year 12 the following year.

Why do you ask when my child’s current school year finishes?

School calendars vary widely by country, so “Year 7” doesn’t finish at the same time everywhere. If your child’s current year level finishes in April or later, they’ll join John Paul College at that same year level for the rest of the Australian school year (which runs January–November). If it finishes before April, they’ll join at the next year level up, since enough of the Australian school year has already passed by the time they’d enrol.
