During the September holidays, my husband and I went to Lugala, near Kampala, Uganda, in East Africa to run training programs for national teachers.
It was through a Christian organisation called COME Uganda, which has four schools, a medical centre, and a hospital program.
The schools only have children who are from very poor families. These children would not be able to attend school, without the support of others around the world. The students are given breakfast, lunch, a school uniform, school supplies and the teachers are paid a wage.
Last year, COME Uganda started an Adult Literacy Program, we have been writing curriculum, and sending it over to help their national teacher, who has had no formal teacher training.
In addition, during our two weeks, we were able to run some workshops to train the local teachers from the COME schools, and also teachers from 5 other schools in the area.
John Paul International College, kindly donated a no longer needed class set of resources for the English classes. A couple of teachers from the International College also donated money to the schools.
We were able to purchase the first readers for one of the schools which has no electricity and had no resources at all. Another teacher from JPIC donated some books she had written herself.
It was such a privilege and honour to see the faces of the students and teachers when presented with donated resources. Their eyes lit up; they were so appreciative.
So thank you John Paul International College and be assured that your generosity is appreciated in Kampala, Uganda.
